Rail and Coastal Flooding

RAIL AND FLOOD

ForeCoast® is used extensively along the UK coastline to provide a holistic approach for managing coastal flood risk and railway operations. For example, more than ten ForeCoast® Flood coastal flood forecasting systems are in operation for the Environment Agency and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.

Case study: In Wales, ForeCoast® has been combined with JBA's long-term investment planning system, AssetCoast, to provide Network Rail with the information required to mitigate weather and metocean risks across a range of time-scales.  This work was awarded two ICE innovation awards in 2015.  Following our work in Wales, new ForeCoast® Rail systems are also under development for three other Network Rail routes.

Offshore Wind

OFFSHORE WIND

ForeCoast® Marine is being used on a number of UK and European offshore wind farm developments.  The system is being used to optimise installation and O&M strategies by exploring the impact of different approaches on project financials and health and safety considerations.  The Mission Planner is also being used to manage live weather risks.  

Case study: JBA has teamed up with ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) and the Met Office to apply ForeCoast® Marine to two of SPR's offshore wind farms: Wikinger and East Anglia ONE.  ForeCoast® Marine is being used to inform installation activities for Wikinger and to explore the impacts of different O&M strategies for East Anglia ONE.  For a summary of our work at Rampion Offshore Wind Farm click here

Marine Construction

MARINE CONSTRUCTION

ForeCoast® Marine is being applied to a number of large infrastructure projects in the UK and overseas to plan and optimise marine construction activities. Applications include energy infrastructure developments and coastal protection schemes.

Case study: In 2016, JBA was approached to use ForeCoast® Marine to help inform the construction strategy for a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal project.  The terminal will be constructed in an inclement environment with large tidal ranges.  A range of construction techniques are under consideration, each with their own tolerances and complexities with respect to weather and tidal conditions.  ForeCoast® Marine was used to evaluate the impacts of different construction strategies on project downtime, programme and costs.  

WAVE AND TIDAL

ForeCoast® Marine is playing a vital role in guiding the installation of a range of wave and tidal energy projects.  
 

Case study: The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, has teamed up with JBA and the Met Office to develop and implement a ForeCoast® Marine system for their test facility operations.  Development of this system involved the incorporation of large amounts of operational data, resource models and telemetry data from EMEC's wave (Billia Croo) and tidal (Fall of Warness) test sites.  The resulting system allows narrow tidal and weather windows to be exploited and costs, program delays and H&S risks to be minimised. 

"Given the complex nature of the marine activities at EMEC, it is essential that robust planning strategies are in place to ensure that the costs to EMEC and our clients are minimised and that the highest standards of H&S are met," said Stuart Baird, Operations Director at EMEC.

Wave and Tidal Energy / Marine Renewables

PORTS AND HARBOURS

ForeCoast® Marine is being used to optimise operations at a number of ports and harbours.  The tool integrates seasonal and short term weather predictions into port operations to mitigate weather downtime, increase efficiency during tidal windows, reduce health & safety risks and impacts to third parties.  

Case study: JBA is working with a major fuel import and distribution terminal to allow operators to exploit weather windows and maximise the volume of fuel which can be transported through the port. 

 

The system includes features such as: berth tranquillity alerts; ship transit and berth planning function; numerical Under Keel Clearance (NUCK) and safety analysis system; weather alerts.

Wave and Tidal Energy / Marine Renewables

CLIMATE ADAPTATION

ForeCoast® Marine is being used to examine the impact of present day and future metocean conditions on marine industries.   

Case study: As part of the Copernicus C3S contract, JBA is tasked with considering how metocean conditions will impact operations within the offshore wind and ports and harbour sectors, both now and in the future. This will be achieved by applying ForeCoast® Marine to a series of end user cases.  Following this work, JBA will develop generalised indices and tools for incorporation within the climate data store that will help others in the marine sector to evaluate and plan for the impacts of metocean conditions.
